Jonny’s Birthday Week Continues: Pancakes, Poached Eggs, and Plenty of Walking.

A Scenic Journey to The Ivy, Tower Bridge

After a breakfast of American Pancakes with Maple Syrup and Bacon (prepared by the birthday boy), we made our way to London, buzzing with excitement for the next chapter of the birthday celebrations. Our destination (although unplanned and spontanious) was The Ivy at Tower Bridge, a restaurant renowned not only for its exquisite cuisine but also for its prime location with breathtaking views of the iconic Tower Bridge and the River Thames.

Upon arrival, the first thing that struck us was the restaurant's striking décor. The Ivy exudes a blend of luxury and comfort, with lush greenery, opulent golden accents, and plush seating that set a lavish yet welcoming tone. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered unobstructed views of the bustling river and the majestic Tower Bridge, providing a backdrop that turned our meal into a visual spectacle.

For brunch, we indulged in the restaurant's famed Eggs Royale alongside an assortment of elegantly prepared poached egg dishes, each beautifully presented on artisan bread with perfectly executed hollandaise sauce. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a testament to The Ivy's reputation for culinary excellence. The menu, while sophisticated, was approachable, featuring a variety of options that catered to our diverse tastes and dietary preferences.

Beyond the food, what made our experience truly memorable was the impeccable service. The staff at The Ivy were attentive without being intrusive, enhancing our dining experience with their professionalism and warmth. They were knowledgeable about the menu and happy to share recommendations, making us feel like valued guests.

Another highlight of The Ivy was, surprisingly, its restrooms. Decorated with vibrant wallpapers and furnished with sleek fixtures, the bathrooms were so luxurious they could rival any five-star hotel, adding an unexpected but delightful touch to our visit.

As we dined, we took in the lively atmosphere of the restaurant, filled with the gentle hum of conversation and the soft clinking of glasses, all set against the scenic panorama of the Thames. It was the perfect setting for a leisurely brunch, combining culinary delights with stunning aesthetics, making it a standout experience in our London adventure.

A Boba Tea Experience at the Barbican

After a delightful lunch, our journey took us to the Barbican Centre, one of London's most iconic multi-arts and conference venues, known for its brutalist architecture and vibrant cultural offerings. The Barbican isn't just a place; it's a cultural powerhouse nestled in the heart of London. It houses concert halls, theaters, cinemas, exhibition halls, and even a library, making it a beacon for art lovers and culture seekers.

On this visit, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try boba tea for the first time at one of the Barbican's quaint cafes. While the chewy tapioca pearls weren't exactly my style—I'm more of a straightforward espresso man—the experience was worth the try. However, the real standout of our Barbican visit was the conservatory. This lush urban oasis is tucked away within the complex, a secret garden amid the concrete. It's home to more than 2,000 species of tropical plants and trees, alongside exotic fish, creating a tranquil escape from the city's hustle. Kelly, a self-proclaimed "big-time plant girl," was in her element, marveling at the rare and beautiful flora. The warmth and greenery offered a stark contrast to the Barbican's stark exterior, proving that this place holds hidden gems in its vast folds.

The Barbican, with its mix of art, culture, and natural beauty, offered a reflective pause in our day—a reminder of London's diverse offerings and its ability to surprise and delight at every corner.

Sunset Delights at Saint Katherine’s Docks: Kilikya’s Gastro

After a day filled with culinary adventures and city explorations, our journey led us to the tranquil Saint Katherine’s Docks for the final treat of the day. As we approached the docks at sundown, the area transformed with the golden glow of the setting sun, reflecting off the serene waters and illuminating the moored yachts and barges with a soft, amber light. It was here, amidst this picturesque backdrop, that we found Kilikya’s Gastro, a Turkish restaurant known for its authentic cuisine and stunning waterside views.

Kilikya’s Gastro offers a unique blend of traditional Turkish dishes served in a contemporary and stylish setting. The outdoor seating area provided an ideal vantage point to enjoy the dockside ambiance while indulging in a delicious array of flavors from Turkey. We started with a selection of meze—calamari for me, bursting with freshness and a hint of the sea, and cripsy spinach and feta parcels for Kelly. For the mains, I braved a Turkish mixed grill, swapping out the usual rice to avoid the dreaded stomach cramps—rice and I have a complicated relationship, and it's rarely a "Worth It Moment." Kelly opted for a lighter but equally tantalizing chicken pitta, stuffed with vibrant flavors.

While the service was a tad slower than we're used to, the breathtaking scenery of the docks at dusk more than made up for the wait. The restaurant itself is elegantly decorated, with a modern twist on classic Turkish designs, creating an inviting and warm atmosphere that complements the natural beauty of its surroundings. The staff at Kilikya’s Gastro were wonderfully accommodating, providing recommendations and ensuring our meal was nothing short of perfect.

Dining at Kilikya’s as the sun dipped below the horizon was a magical experience. The combination of exquisite food, exceptional service, and the enchanting setting made it a memorable end to an already spectacular day. Saint Katherine’s Docks, with its hidden gems like Kilikya’s Gastro, proved to be the perfect locale for enjoying the quieter, more reflective moments of London life, away from the usual hustle and bustle..

Reflections on Another Perfect Day

Miraculously managing to avoid any significant digestive upsets, I fully immersed myself in every moment—from the first bite on pancakes to the last sip of Turkish tea by the docks. Logging nearly 30,000 steps, the day was not only a celebration of food and culture but also a testament to London's endless capacity to surprise and charm. Here's to embracing life’s adventures, whether planned or spontaneous!
